Step 1- Reference Photos
When placing your order for your custom portrait, please provide as many clear and high resolution images of your subject as possible in order for me to draw with detail, If the image is blurry or pixelated, it will be difficult to draw in a realistic style.
If your pet or loved one has sadly passed away, and new images are not possible, I would be happy to assist with enhancing the images to create the best portrait for you!
Good Reference Photos
Good Reference Images:
- Well lit environment
- Pose and posture of the dog
- Full body if possible.
- Lots of detail around the eyes and definition of fur.
- Taken from the subjects level.

Bad Reference Images:
- Poorly lit environment blurs the detail around the eyes and makes definition of fur hard to see
- Pose does not make for the best portrait,. Large sections of the body not visible.
- Subject looking up creates poor perspective.

Step 3 - My Process
My portraits are created entirely by hand using one of two mediums.

Coloured Pencil
For small to medium sized portraits I tend to use coloured pencil. These are no ordinary coloured pencils, however!!
I only use the highest quality brands such as Faber Castell and Caran D'ache. They are renowned for their vibrant and consistent pigmentation and archival quality lightfast rating, ensuring that your portrait will stay vibrant and fade resistant for well over 100 years.
Adding a background to a coloured pencil portrait is a lengthy process, but i am happy to do so for an additional charge.

Pastel Pencil
For medium to large portraits, I would recommend Pastel Pencils.
Soft pastels make it easier to cover large areas with smooth and consistent layers, especially for background gradients.
Pastel Pencils are then used to build layers to create depth and tone before adding fine detail on top.
For all my Pastel Portraits I use Clairefontaine Pastelmat Surface, an acid free and lightfast paper/board with a velvet surface that holds pastel so well that you do not need to use fixative spray which can dull the colours.

Step 4 - Completion & Shipping
I would be happy to provide regular progress pictures throughout the drawing to ensure you're happy with the progress of your portrait, and make any changes you neccessary. Only when you're 100% happy with your portrait will the remaining balance be paid.
No artwork will be shipped without full payment.
I am happy to provide mounting and framing options as an add on.
Artwork will be well packaged and shipped via Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Tracking Service. Shipping is free on all Small and Medium portraits, with a £10 charge for Large portraits.
